Meet Sammy Ochman.
Born
in the Guiding Eyes for the Blind kennel in 1992, Sam Ochman
was deemed "too timid" for Seeing Eye Dog training.
He has been B.L. Ochman's faithful
and funny companion ever since.
A Canine Good Citizen and certified Delta Society Pet Partner
since 1993, Sam is a visiting Therapy Dog at a public school
in New York City. B.L. and Sam work with Cerebral Palsy, Down's
Syndrome and autistic children weekly as part of the school's
Occupational Therapy program. Sam provides motivation and
unconditional love. The children respond with unimaginable
courage and joy.
Sam has been part of one miracle. "Hello Dog" the
first words of six-year old TaiQui, who has Cerebral Palsy,
were uttered during one of Sam's visits. Within a month TaiQui
was able to say "Sam is a big yellow dog." And not
long after he was talking non-stop.
Sam has been featured in an Eva Gabor Wig Catalog, a Miracle-Gro
Plant Food press kit and an ad for Bert Pulitzer menswear.
When he's not working, Sam likes to catch tennis balls (he
can hold three in his mouth at once,) eat apples, play with
his cat Charley, hike with B.L., and officiate at What's Next
Online meetings. |
