Questions You Must Ask Before You Grant an Interview

While it's flattering to be asked for an interview by a reporter, it also is important that you ask some questions before you say yes.

  • Be sure you know the reporter's name and the name of his/her medium.
  • Ask what is the subject of the interview and how will it be used. Is it part of a feature that will run three months from now, or will it be included in a breaking news story?
  • Find out if other interviews are part of the story. If the medium is broadcast, ask whether it will be live or tape?
  • Ask if the story will include interviews with other people or just you or your company representative.

By asking questions you can find out if you are actually the most qualified and knowledgeable person in your organization to be interviewed. If the reporter insists on interviewing you, at least you'll have time to gather the facts and materials you'll need to answer the questions intelligently. Feel free to say "I need to do some checking and I'll get back to you right away."
